What is Cyproterone Acetate?

Cyproterone acetate contains anti-androgenic effect which suppresses the testosterone action on the tissues of the human beings. The main function of cyproterone is to block the androgen receptors present in the body due to which the androgen will not bind with the receptors thereby reducing the level of testosterone in the human body. Studies have shown that cyproterone acetate is capable for reducing the chance of disorder called as hirsutism. Hirsutism is caused due to the production of androgen hormone in the ovaries of the women. Some other diseases which can be treated with cyproterone are precocious puberty and hot flushes because of its weak progestational activity.

Cyproterone acetate can also be used with some oral contraceptives pills for treating acne production on the face.  Just like any other treatment, cyproterone acetate is also reported to show certain side effects. Some of the common side effects are: loss of libido, deficiency in adrenal glands, frequent headache, nausea or vomiting feeling, swing in the mood throughout the day and irregular menstrual cycle. If cyproterone is taken excessively then amenorrhea may result. One serious problem cause by heavy intake of cyproterone acetate is toxicity in the liver due to which the changes in the liver enzymes of the patient has to be monitored continuously.
