What Type of Treatments is there for Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic Dermatitis is usually treated with shampoos that contain selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid, sulfur and one antifungal drug. It should be used in alternate days until the dermatitis comes under control and later the shampoo must be used twice a week to prevent the recurrence of the condition.

Ketoconazole is an effective cream that is used to treat this condition. In adults, the scales and crusts can be effectively loosened by applying corticosteroids salicylic acid or corticosteroids and should be left overnight.

The treatment should be necessarily continued for a few consecutive weeks and it then can be restarted at any instant if the dermatitis shows up again. Application of Topical corticosteroids on the scalp region and remaining affected areas also helps in treating dermatitis.

One must use mild corticosteroids, for instance 1% hydrocortisone for facial treatment. Even these mils form of corticosteroids ought to be used with utmost caution and under medical supervision as long-term application of these corticosteroids may cause skin disorders.

In young children and infants, a combination of mineral oil and 2% of salicylic acid can be massaged gently on the rash before bedtime. Mild baby shampoo can be used to wash the scalp daily, and hydrocortisone of 1% strength can be applied to the scalp.
