What are the Treatments for Androgenic Alopecia?

There are several treatment options for androgenic alopecia. The preferred treatment for androgenic alopecia is Minoxidil. This medication is available in the form of liquid or foam. It must be applied onto the scalp twice daily. It works by stimulating and enlarging hair follicles and enhancing hair growth. This medication must be used regularly and continuously to see good results. A side effect associated with this treatment is hypertrichosis or excess hair growth in certain regions like around the eyebrows, cheeks and malar region.

Another medication use to treat male pattern baldness is Finasteride. This mediation reduces the rate at which testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone and thus reduces the rate of hair fall. This medication is not approved for use in women. Women can also go in for hormone replacement therapy which aims to block the male hormones present in the female body and thus reduce the formation of dihydrotestosterone which is responsible for androgenic alopecia.

Estrogen therapy may also help to some extent although there are some side effects associated with this. Some people may go in for other methods like hair transplants or scalp reduction procedures to overcome androgenic alopecia. Others may use wigs or hairpieces to disguise this condition while still others may choose not to do anything.
