Lupus hair loss is caused by DLE or Discord Lupus Erythematosus which is a kind of skin disease. This leads to formation of red lesions on the scalp which damages the hair follicles. If it is not treated properly, it can cause permanent loss of hair. Though the actual origin of DLE disease is unknown, researchers believe that it has links with genetics and is inherited from family members.

Exposure to sunlight or ultra violet rays can increase the severity of the disease. Stress is another important factor which helps in further growth of DLE. There is no particular cure for DLE but proper self care can prove to be effective. People suffering from DLE should avoid exposure to sunlight as much as possible. While going out one should wear dark colored clothes as dark colors help to divert the harmful ultra violet rays.

DLE patients should also stay away from places which experiences extreme hot or cold temperatures as it will only worsen the condition. They should also use proper sun blocks consisting of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide before going out in the sun. DLE can be detected through blood test and biopsy. To control the DLE symptoms doctors usually prescribe oral medications, corticosteroids for the inflammation, topical immunosuppressive drugs and for severe cases anti malarial drugs.
