What is Telogen?

Telogen is the resting phase which involves around 10-15 % of the hair. The duration of this period varies for different parts of the body. For the scalp hair, the Telogen stage spans for around 100 days. It, however, lasts longer for the hair present on the eyelashes, arms, legs and eyebrows. This period is marked by the complete formation of hair club and the attainment of dormant form among the hair follicle. This means that the hair entering into this stage simply sits on the scalp without undergoing any growth. It further characterizes the formation of the solid, hard and dry material at the base of the root when the person attempts to pull out a strand of the scalp hair. People, at this stage experience the shed of 25-100 telogen hair strands at an average of twenty four hours. The hair shed becomes severe in the days of autumn and winter. Excessive downfall of hair during Telogen period takes place at events that trigger hormonal imbalances. For example, events like child bearing, operation, consumption of certain medicines, flu, fever, and abrupt weight loss excruciates the intensity of this stage. As soon as the Telogen cycle completes, the hair re-enter into the Anagen phase. The old hair shafts are lost and the new hair shafts appear.
