What are the Symptoms of Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is a common skin condition where the hair follicles get inflamed due to bacterial or fungal infection. Folliculitis can occur at any part of the body that has hair follicles. Some of the common locations where this infection appears are thighs, back, neck, face, buttocks and legs. The most common symptom of Folliculitis appears as small red bumps which are located at the hair follicles. This type of infection can also lead to the appearance of chicken skin. In general 10 to 100 small sized red bumps are scattered over the affected area like back. Some of these bumps may also have a red halo which indicates inflammation.

In some of the cases of Folliculitis, scratching the top also reveals coiled hair within. The area of the infection can range from one half inch to a larger size which mainly depends upon the kind of infection. Though Folliculitis infection can affect any person at any age but people with health conditions of weak immune system, obesity, diabetes and fungal infection are more prone to get them. Medically Folliculitis is harmless but it can be cosmetically displeasing in most of the cases. Majority of Folliculitis infection resolves on its own without undergoing any treatment but a serious one definitely requires a medical attention.
