Will Stopping the Medication Stop Hair Loss?

Besides the medicinal benefits, most drugs have one or the other harmful side effects including hair loss. The drug induced hair loss occurs when the toxic content of the medicine affects the matrix of the hair. There are 2 main types of hair loss in this condition which include Anagen effluvium and telogen effluvium.

If you have Anagen effluvium, the hair loss starts appearing within few days and weeks after taking medicine. In case of telogen effluvium the hair loss gets prominent only after two to four months of drug administration. The hair loss caused by drugs is a situation which is reversible after the interruption of the treatment. The severity and the prevalence of the hair loss mainly depend upon the type of drug and on the individual predisposition.

There are drugs that cause hair loss in the patients taking appropriate dosage, while some drugs are only responsible for abnormalities caused by overdose. In order to prevent the hair loss caused due to medication, understanding of the drugs which leads to hair loss is very important. Stopping the offending medication can help to stop the hair loss but one should always consult their doctor before stopping any treatment or medicine. Moreover there are many cases where stopping the medication will not help to re grow the hair and in such conditions other treatment options should be followed.
