What is Seborrheic Dermatitis? |
Seborrheic Dermatitis is a common skin condition characterized by the formation of whitish-yellowish scaly flakes on the oily areas of the skin like scalp and insides of the ear. This condition is most commonly observed in the areas that have rich presence of sebum like trunk, face, scalp and ear. The common triggers for this kind of dermatitis are changes in humidity, build-up of stress, mount of emotional turbulences, changes in the weather condition, regular usage of lotions with rich presence of alcohol, abrupt weight gains, skin disorders of sorts like acne / pimples and much more. The severity of Seborrheic Dermatitis may manifest in form of mild dandruff to the extreme condition called exfoliative erythroderma, depending on the individual. The main cause of this condition is the excessive release of oil on the skin. It can also be caused by immense irritation due the attack of a form of yeast called malassezia. This condition is associated with the occurrence of intense disorders like heart strokes, Parkinson’s diseases or a head injury, HIV and more. This condition takes a harmless and short-lived form among infants or toddlers. Similar symptoms, like the appearance of thick crusty scales, are also found among the children below the age of one year. |
