What is Ringworm on the Scalp?

Ringworm on the scalp is a kind of ringworm infection. This infection is common to children, teenagers and toddlers. The occurrence of this form of ringworm infection is typically characterized by the formation of red colored, itchy and bald patches on the scalp of the person. This infection in the medical terminology is referred as Tinea Capitis. The person suffering from this infection basically undergoes an attack by a fungal organism called dermatophytes, better known as scalp fungus. This fungal micro-organism infests inside the tissues of hair and causes scaly and crusty patches.

Ringworm of the scalp appears in form of a petty pimple at the time of infestation. Then the pimple grows into much larger patches that leads to temporary baldness among people. The hair on the infected areas become extremely brittle and starts breaking on a slight pull. Sometimes, a yellow colored crusty patch also develops on the scalp of the person. This ringworm usually becomes noticeable after 10-14 days of its contraction. This type of fungal infection is commonly observed in children studying in schools, day care centers and nurseries. It easily gets spread through an indirect or direct skin contact with the infected person.
