What is 5-a-reductase Inhibitors?

5-a-reductase inhibitors are drugs with antiandrogenic activity which is used in the treatment of the benign prostatic hyperplasia. When these drugs are consumed, they reduce the level of 5-a-reductase before it binds with the enzyme thereby reducing the level of DHT which originates from such bond. Reduction in DHT means that the sensitive hair follicles will not be subjected to its effect and will get sufficient time to become healthy. 5-a-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride and dutasteride interrupt with the effect of certain male hormones androgens on the prostate.

This lowers the growth of prostate thereby causing it to become smaller. The symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia can be relieved by 5-a-reductase. 5-a-reductase inhibitors are recommended for men with moderate symptoms of BPH. 5-a-reductase blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone that stimulates the prostate. 5-a-reductase reduces the risk of complications, improves the urinary flow, and shrinks the prostate.

The side effects of 5-a-reductase are inability in getting erection, impotence, breast tenderness. If you are suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia which goes from mild to moderate or androgenic alopecia then it is the indication that there is need for you to take 5-a-reductase inhibitors. Long usage may also cause prostate cancer.
