What Is The Norwood Scale?

Norwood scale is the scale which is used for the classification for the hair loss. It is used to denote the extent and pattern of baldness of male. Norwood scale was developed by Dr James Hamilton in 1950. Norwood scale is characterized by seven levels of baldness readings which are as follows:

1. Norwood scale 1: The head looks normal with proper hair growth with no visible hair loss.

2. Norwood scale 2: This scale is characterized by loss of hair in wedge-shaped pattern.

3. Norwood scale 3: The hair loss shows the same pattern as that of the Norwood scale 2. But the only thing noticed here is that the hairline has receded deeper into the frontal area and the temporal area.

4. Norwood scale 4: The hair loss continues in the frontal area and temporal area but with the beginning of the bald spot at the back of the head.

5. Norwood scale 5: The hair loss pattern is same as that of the Norwood scale 4 but with reduced hair density.

6. Norwood scale 6: The strip of hair that existed in Norwood 4 and 5 is not visible in Norwood 6.

7. Norwood 7: The hair recedes to the base of the head and the sides just above the ears.
