What Type of Medications are Taken for Alopecia?

The treatment for the disorder, Alopecia, usually involves the intake of a series of powerful medications that work rigorously at encouraging the growth of the hair back. Minoxidil is one such potent medicine that is available over the counter. It shows its best effects at the crown area of the head and less effect on the front portion and the edges of the scalp. This medicine is also termed as Rogaine in medical terminology. This medicine in the form of cream should be ideally applied twice a day. It is available in two varied strengths, 2 % solution and 5 % solution.

Finasteride, also known as Propecia, is a less powerful drug that basically reduces release from prostrates among middle aged men. This medicine is only available through prescription and must be taken once a day. The main function of this medicine is to keep the remaining hair intact on the scalp. It proves to be less effective at enabling hair re-growth. Therefore, this medicine is best taken at the initial stage of this disease. Impotency is one of the most dangerous side effects of the over-dosage of this medicine. Other than these, Corticosteroid is another drug that successfully gains control over the immune system in order to treat the bald patches.
