How is Involutional Alopecia Diagnosed?

Alopecia is the term used to describe hair loss. In order to diagnose involutional alopecia a doctor will have to analyze the patient’s entire medical and personal history. Doctors will look out for previous and current illnesses, medications and family history of hair loss. Patients will also be asked about their dietary habits and hair care habits. For female patients, doctors will ask them about menstrual cycles, pregnancy, hormone imbalances and menopause. Doctors will also carry out a physical examination to check the total hair on the scalp and pattern of hair loss. They will also conduct blood tests or imaging tests to diagnose any underlying conditions which may be responsible for hair loss. The scalp will be checked for infections to rule out the possibility of an infection causing the hair loss. Some medications like antidepressants and anti coagulants may cause side effects like hair loss. The patient’s medical history will alert the doctor about such conditions.

Unlike other forms of alopecia like alopecia areata or pattern baldness, this form does not have any particular pattern of hair fall. Hair fall is even throughout the scalp. By excluding other causes and looking out for the pattern of hair loss, doctors will be able to make an accurate diagnosis.
