What is Folliculitis?

Folliculitis is basically an infection of the hair follicles which is caused by bacteria and fungus. This infection may also be caused by the blockage or the friction of the sebaceous glands. In majority of the cases this type of infection clears up on its own within a period of time and does not require any special attention.

Folliculitis generally appears as small pimples which are located at the base of the hair follicle. These pimples usually have a white head which is filled with pus. In mild cases of infection, soap and water can be used to treat these pimples and the immune system of the body will overcome this infection within few days. But in cases of deep folliculitis when the infection reaches the roots of the follicle, proper medical attention and treatment is required.

The symptoms of folliculitis depend upon the type of infection but some of the most common signs which appear on the infected area are redness, inflammation, itching and pain. Folliculitis can affect any part of the body where hair growth is present. The areas which are more prone to this type of infection include underarms, thighs, groin areas and face. Susceptibility to folliculitis becomes more prominent under various health conditions like obesity, weak immune system, diabetes and viral and fungal infection. One of the most effective ways of preventing folliculitis is to keep the skin clean and dry from perspiration and moisture.
