What is a Finasteride?

Finasteride is a prescribed medicine licensed for treating inflamed prostate and is also a commonly used medicine for male pattern hair loss in men. An enlarged prostate is also termed as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. By restricting the transformation of testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone, this medicine shrinks the prostate and stops hair loss thereby increasing hair growth. Finasteride is available in form of tablets. You can either use the ones of 1mg for stopping hair loss or the ones of 5mg for treating enlarged prostate. Finasteride can be taken orally once every day. However finasteride has several side effects including impotence, breast enlargement, abnormal ejaculation, testicular pain, decreased libido.

As we have discussed earlier, Finasteride stops conversion of testosterone into Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This results in the reduction of the DHT level in the patient’s body. Frequent urination, interrupted urination is the symptoms of the men suffering form BPH. These symptoms can be relieved by taking finasteride. Hair loss can also be prevented by taking finasteride. Finasteride reduces the chance of prostate cancer disease. Alpha-blockers soothe muscles in the urinary tract and prostate. The symptoms of BPH can be relieved by the alpha-blockers thus improving urine flow and thereby reducing the risk of bladder obstruction. They are useful for smaller prostate. 5-alpha-reductase is better for larger prostate thus increasing the urine flow and helps shrink the prostate.
