Can Estrogen Effect Women and Hair Loss?

The role of estrogen in hair growth is dubious, as there is no substantial evidence. There have been many researches in this field but nothing concrete has evolved. Many researches have established a relationship between estrogen and hair loss but it is not approved universally.

Some studies suggest that estrogen helps in quicker hair growth. It also helps in increasing the longevity of the hair. It also increases the growth period of hair follicles as it directly affects the Anagen growth phase. To treat hair loss in women, physicians prescribe Oral and tropical estrogens, though there is no proof to support this use of estrogen. A study based on hair loss shows that, two treatments for hair loss in women viz., androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata warns the women who use oral contraceptives to fight hair loss should take extreme care in choosing the one’s with little or no androgenetic activity at all. Estrogen is more useful in case of hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia. Women who suffer from androgenetic alopecia should not use testosterone or androgenetic precursors like DHEA. They are said to have fatal consequences. Women who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome usually develop Androgenetic alopecia.
