How is Androgenic Alopecia Diagnosed?

To diagnose androgenic alopecia, a doctor will analyze your medical and family history. You may also be asked about hair care and dietary habits. This condition is easy to diagnose since the hair loss follows a particular pattern. Hair loss in men begins at the crown of the scalp or around the temples. Women may begin to lose hair at the crown of the scalp.

Sometimes, there may be a widening of the part of the hair. Sometimes, doctors may pull some hair to see how many comes out. This will help determine the extent of the problem. Skin biopsy may be carried out to identify if there is an illness or infection that may be causing the hair fall. Blood tests may also be recommended to identify thyroid hormone or other hormone imbalances. Some medications may also be associated with increased hair loss.

Your doctor can assess your medical history to find out whether the medications you are currently using are responsible for your hair loss. All such diagnostic techniques are usually not required to identify androgenic alopecia. A study of the pattern of hair loss is sufficient to make an accurate diagnosis. Once the condition has been diagnosed, doctors will be able to suggest proper treatment for this kind of alopecia.
