Is Androgenic Alopecia Curable?

Androgenic alopecia is a kind of pattern baldness seen in both men and women. This condition is associated with many factors like genetics and aging. It seems to be caused due to the effects of dihydrotestosterone on hair follicles. This derivative of testosterone shrinks hair follicles and triggers hair loss.

Although androgenic alopecia cannot be cured, it can be treated by several methods. Some drugs which are approved by the FDA for treatment of androgenic alopecia include Minoxidil, Finasteride etc. These drugs work by stimulating hair growth and reducing the rate of hair fall. Topical treatment with tretinoin also has shown some promise in delaying with this condition. Women may choose to go in for hormone replacement or estrogen therapy. Serums containing minerals, amino acids and nutrients may help promote hair growth to some extent.

Several herbal products are also available to improve hair texture, volume and reduce hair fall. Some people may go in for hair transplants where plus of hair are removed from areas containing more active hair follicles and transplanted to balding areas. Scalp reduction surgery may help mask the condition by reducing the bald area of the scalp. Hair pieces and wigs will help mask this condition to some extent.
