Is Alopecia Hereditary?

Alopecia is hereditary in nature and it is caused due to genes acquired from either father or mother. Chances of acquiring these are equal from father and mother.

Alopecia is known by many different names such as common baldness, pattern baldness, and diffuse hair loss. Alopecia is the most common kind of baldness.

Most men experience alopecia after the age of 40. People think that it is a superficial problem. Alopecia is not so common among women. Those who develop alopecia at the age of thirty, there is possibility of getting alopecia to the family members is less. But the one who develops alopecia before thirty years of age, then the chances of passing alopecia to their family members is more. Alopecia occurs in the families whose members had asthma, hay fever, atopic eczema. People suffering from alopecia experience hair loss or thinning of hair in their adult life. Androgenetic alopecia is dependent on androgen.

Men suffering form androgenetic alopecia have a receding hairline and hair loss from moderate to extensive mainly on the front-o-temporal area. A woman suffering from androgenetic alopecia experience thinning of hair at the age of 30 and becomes noticeable at the age of 40. Minoxidil, finasteride and surgery are the three types of medical treatment to cure hereditary hair loss.
