How is Alopecia Diagnosed?

Alopecia can be characterized as:

The smooth surface of the bald patch

This Patch either doesn’t have any hair or there are only a few hairs on the surface of the patch.

However, sometimes, to diagnose this condition, it is important to take up scalp biopsy. In this biopsy, a 4 millimeter punch biopsy of the subcutaneous fat is taken for the purpose of testing.

Apart from this other tests that will confirm this condition are the blood tests for detecting the levels of the following agents:

Serum Iron, Serum Ferritin, (Total Iron Binding capacity) 

VDRL 

Complete Blood Count

DHEAS, Testosterone, Androstenedione, Prolactin, Follicle Stimulating and Luteinizing Hormone 

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone

Apart from this, the health expert or doctor can diagnose this condition after inquiring on the following points:

How old this problem is?

Is there a family history of diseases like lupus, diabetes and anemia?

What is the pattern of hair fall?

Are you using any birth control pills?

Are you a new mother or are going through the menopausal stage?

Are you going through any stress in life?

Taking into consideration the above tools of diagnosis, the condition of the patient can be confirmed. Right and timely diagnosis will help the doctor to take the suitable measure and start the treatment.
