To diagnose Alopecia areata, the following blood tests are employed:

  1. DHEAS, Androstenedione, Testosterone, Prolactin, Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone
  2. Serum Ferritin, Serum Iron, TIBC
  3. TSH
  4. CBC

It is always advisable to approach a physician with a history of your Alopecia areata and giving the information about the medication you follow, family history of diabetes, arthritis, asthma, anemia, vitiligo, lupus or Addison’s disease.

The general diagnostic technique employed by doctors involve tugging a handful of hair gently, the hair that comes out determines the severity of the condition, however this is a preliminary test to verify the condition and to ensure that that it is not a simple localized hair loss condition. The affect scalp may be taken for biopsy to determine the root cause for this condition, this is the most efficient way to Prevent this condition if found positive.
